Permits, rules & responsible exploring

Check the rules for your destination before setting out. National parks and fishing waters have local restrictions in addition to general access rights.

Fishing & fisheries management fee

Basic hook-and-line fishing and ice fishing are generally free in waters where permitted. Lure fishing usually requires a fisheries management fee for anglers aged 18–69; people who turned 65 by 31 December 2023 remain exempt. A separate permit for the water area may also be needed.

National park instructions

Follow the park’s route and camping instructions. Cycling is restricted within the park. Metsähallitus provides the rules for fires, dogs and protecting nature on the destination page.

Check the weather and current warnings. Match your equipment and route to the conditions, carry a map and tell someone your plans. Do not venture onto ice without reliable information about its strength.
